DRM017: Matthus Raman

It took me a while to finally post this one, so I would like to apologize to my good friend and french connect, producer Matthus Raman.  It's incredible how busy things have become here at the Deep North's HQ.  Anyways, a few weeks ago I postedvery strong remix Matthus did of the track Concrete by another French producer, Remain - - who, by the way, has an upcoming EP release on My Favourite Robot Records, the party for which we will be hosting on October 21st here in Toronto.  In case you missed my post on this excellent remix, here it is again.

Remain - Concrete (Matthus Raman Remix) >>> [BUY IT]

Shortly after posting this remix, Matthus and I came into contact with one another, and it turns out that the upcoming techno producer and Family N.A.M.E. resident is an extremely nice guy.  Without hesitation, Matthus said he would be happy to make us an exclusive mix.  Well, he was he was not lying , because the mix was done within a couple of days.  Matthus has released a few dark and dirty remixes under the Family Name imprint, including one of Elagua's track Cambia La Vidaand one of Clement Meyer's tune Piece by Piece - - both which can be heard below through YouTube.

Elagua - Cambia La Vida (Matthus Raman Remix) >>> [BUY IT]

Clement Meyer - Piece by Piece (Matthus Raman Remix) >>> [BUY IT]

Before I post the exclusive mix, I wanted to share some interesting information I got from Raman a week ago.  Along with Loran Valdek and Andreas Tome, Raman has plans to launch his own label called Konflict Records in early 2012.  The label will focus on pushing sounds that reflect the feelings and emotions that arise when people experience internal conflict - - a day-to-day occurance for not only him, but all of us.  Now that is deep!

Enough with the chitter-chatter, let's get at-her. The tracklist can be found in the "lyrics" section of the ID3 tags on iTunes.

Motor Musk

Hey everyone. I know its been a while since i last posted and all but I am back and have no time to waste making excuses because that is just nonsense.  Let's get down to buisness.

The first tune up my sleeve is a joint from a young and exceptionally talented man who I have had the pleasure of seeing live no less than twice!. Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, I present to you KMFH (or as you may know him Kyle Hall).

Here is one of my favourite tunes from Hall.  It comes off of his 2010 Must See EP on Third Ear.  The track is called Ghosten and may have one of the chunkiest and most effectively staggered beats of all time. Drift off to d-d-d-dreamland!

Kyle Hall - Ghosten >>> [BUY]

The second track i want to share is i little more driving.  I just found this one last week and its been on repeat ever since. A truly beutiful techno masterpiece, this one is by the skilled analog crafstmen Skudge and is called Surplus.

Skudge - Surplus (Original Mix) >>> [BUY]

Thanks for having me back, and sorry it took me so long to get something up here, at the Deep North!

It's a hot, sunny friday afternoon here in Toronto and you would not even think that the Autumn season is before us, because it feels like this amazing summer will truely be an endless one.  As if the sweet weather was not enough to keep up this ultra-dope high, we are going to inject this day with some more party-power: an exclusive mix from DJ Fame, who will be coming up from Brooklyn to party with us at Bunda Lounge on Saturday night - - the first official return for the Dubsided artist since he brought down the house at the now-defunct Circa a couple of years ago.

Anyhow, DJ Fame is gonna be doing something a bit different for this gig - - and this mix - - than most are accustomed to.  We are stoked to announce that DRM 016 is super special in that our homie has embraced the chance to go deeper and play some stuff he loves but doesn't get to run on the regs: deep house, nu-disco and techno.  Definitely something we are stoked on!!

Check out this super sweet exclusive from the New York native, and come out on Saturday if you're in the area!

DRM 015: Driip

One more time, we are here.  Here at the mouth of the DRM machine, waiting to see what new and exclusive mix we will recieve from the belly of the beast.  I am stoked to share this next DRM mix with you guys because it comes from a young and talented DJ/producer known by two names: his formal, birth name, Brandon Sprouse, and his pseudonym "driip"which I happen to like quite a bit - - as it could mean a number of weird things, especially after delving into his dark, dirty and grimey taste in music.

Sprouse has often said that his signature sound is no-nonsense techno, the kind that keeps your head pointed downward in a dark room, freeing your mind from surrounding distractions while focusing it on the sounds that surround.  Dark, bass heavy techno music is the passion of this up and coming Toronto Native, and you can expect to hear a lot more about the design student's ascent through the techno ranks - - especially if he remains focused on his plan to move to Berlin in order to pursue a full blown career in music.

Brandon can be found posting as a contributing member of the active Toronto blog-squad ElectroTO.  Of course, that is when he is not producing sick music or embedding hot techno tracks on facebook for me to freak out over.  Now that you have heard a couple of his productions, head on down to download his wonderfully crafted Deeply Rooted Mixtape for our blog.  The tracklist can be found in the "lyrics" section of the Mp3's id3 tags.

Let 'er driiiiiiiiiiiiiip !!

DRM 014: Noah Pred

The 14th submission in our exclusive DRM mix series comes from Noah Pred, a great producer, DJ, buinessman and leader in the Canadian Techno scene and beyond.  The owner of the successful Thoughtless music imprint is a very busy guy who -- despite his constant hustle -- always finds the tme to invest in the well being of the artists on his label, put together fun events to help promote those artists and also to help those who have helped help him in the past.  With releases on Thoughtless, My Favourite Robot and New Kanada, among others, Noah Pred has established himself among the top techno producers out there.

Take a moment to download this wonderful exclusive mix that Noah sent us.  The mix is actually a live recording of a recent set Noah did at Li'ly, a Toronto bar & afterhours club - - one which sees a number of top producers and DJs rock out at.  Noah was also kind enough to share two amazing tracks with the readers of the Deep North, Milk Thistle and my personal favourite Unsung FWD Dub, both released on the Thoughless imprint. Enjoy!

Free Fax Trax & Herman's Mix

"The kids are on fire!"

That is what I heard a little old lady say as dozens of small children ran out of a birthday party at a local McDonalds this afternoon, smoke billowing out of the windows as clowns with fire extinguishers piled out of an amphibious 2-door 1968 Volkswagon Beetle.  In the end, the clowns failed to extinguish the fire, and only one double cheeseburger was saved from the blaze.

Just joking.

On a serious note, here are two brand new tunes by a kid who is on fire, The Deep North's Max the Fax.  The kid - - one half of Phantom Ambulance and my new roommate - - is always working on music in the bits of time he has between working and sleeping long hours, with the only break he takes being when he is contemplating whether or not he should cook up some gourmet fettuccini and chicken.  I wish he made that stuff as much as he makes tunes.

You can download the songs either below, or through his bandcamp page.  If you like what you hear, leave us a small comment - - we love the feedback.

Keep your eyes out for a new track by Max and I in the coming week or so, as we have been working on the debut tune for our project dubbed "The Hermans".  Here is a little mix we did way back in May, late and drunk after a party.  It was actually our first ever b2b set.  It's far from perfect, but a fun little mix to get you through the mondaze.

The tracklist can be found in the "information" section of the track, under the "lyrics" tab on iTunes.

Oh, hello ... We Are Back.

The Deep North is back and ready for action.  The new HQ is now hooked up with the internet so we will be back to our regular routine of serving hot, hot servings of deep and delicious house music - - at least according to our tastes.

To comemorate the return, we have a big mix by Neoteric coming at you for DRM012, but we will talk about that one in a bit.

For now, let's turn our attention over to French producer Romain Ruffiac, aka Remain, an artist whom I just found out about during a latenight dig for music last week.  The French producer recently released a ruthless stinger of a tune called Concrete on the french imprint Family Name.  The sixth release on the Family imprint, Concrete comes in a huge package - - possibly the biggest one I have seen for a single - - consisting of eight (8) remixes of the original.  Yes, 8 remixes, one release.

I will let you judge it yourself, but I am bent over whether the original mix is the best version, or whether the remixes by the UK's Matt Walsh or France's Matthus Raman take the cake.  I am still undecided, so listen to these three and decide for yourselves.  Perhaps the release could have come with fewer remixes, because most could not even dream of reaching surefire banger status like these ones...in my humble opinion of course.

CAUTION: EXTREMELY HOT.

Phantom Ambulance's Medicine EP On Thoughtless Music

ATTENTION ALL READERS, LISTENERS & LURKERS.

We have a special announcement today concerning some of our crew members here at the Deep North, in particular the two weirdo's who make up Toronto's hottest new Techno duo Phantom Ambulance.  For those who don't know anything about this see-through EMS vehicle which produces bad-ass tech house, deep house and techno, the duo consists of twenty-one year old friends and obsessive music fans Max the Fax (Deep North founding member, resident DJ and contributor) and Maxwell Lucas (Deep North resident DJ).

The two young producers came together less than a year ago after techno-loving Max the Fax had decided to step his production game up from Garageband to Ableton, following a post I did on his tunes on plugged not thugged last spring and after playing his first ever DJ set at Tick, Tech, Toe, a tech-house night at downtown drinkhole TOTA Lounge.  Maxwell Lucas, a classically trained musician, was lured into the EDM scene by his longtime friend Max's obsession, and before one could blink an eye the two were pumping out killer tunes that were so technically sound, quirky and novel that they impressed even the most respected producers in the game, including Canadian techno titan and Thoughtless Music head Noah Pred.

After hearing a few tunes by the Ambulance, Noah decided to back The Medicine EP, a four track digital release on Thoughtless Music which includes two original tracks -- Medicine and Fabulous -- along with two remixes of Medicine by producers Beton Brut and Dactilar.  The EP is the first release for the boys, and we could not be happier then to see it happen on a Canadian label run by a veteran musician such as Noah, who treats the label as a large family.  In case you are not familiar with this label, the exceptionally talented roster should speak volumes in terms of Thoughtless' penchant for releasing only extremely high quality work.  The imprint has released material by some of the worlds best EDM producers including Jonny White, Kate Simko, Talal & Zoi, James Teej, Mike Shannon, Arthur Oskan, Sean Roman, Zaid Edghaim, Tomas Jirku and Noah Pred himself.  I speak on the whole crew's behalf when I say thank you to Thoughtless Music, Noah and everyone who has supported Phantom Ambulance in the past, present and future.

Below I am going to include four 3-minute previews of the entire Medicine EP, from the originals to the remixes, to give everyone a taste of what the release is like.  We will also direct you to the groubs Bandcamp Page where you will be able to download around five to six previously shared 320kbps Phantom Ambulance tracks FOR FREE!!  GO GET THEM WHILE ITS HOT!!!

It's Been A Minute....Dive In It

It sure has been a minute.  It's even been a few minutes.  Despite how long it has been, some classic house and techno tracks are still being played relentlessly in clubs across the world, bringing back memories to those die hard clubbers who still grace the dance floor, and forever changing the lives of the younger cats who are amazed that the tracks they flip out to were produced 20-30 years ago.  Sometimes forgotten, there are so many tracks that need to be brought back into the mix because, well, they are just so damn good.

Here are some serious bangers that have undoubtedly influenced and shaped the modern Electronic Dance Music (EDM) that continues to move our feet today.  You may have forgotten, you may not have even known it existed.  Either way, let's bring some of that good shit back and freak the fuck out to it.

Cybotron - Cosmic Cars (Detroit Style Mix) ... [1988]

Cybotron, a duo made up of early Detroit techno pioneers Juan Atkins and 3070 (Richard Davis), is without question one of the most influential groups in the history of Techno.  'Cosmic Cars' was originally released on wax by Atkins' own Deep Space Records in 1982, but this version -- the Detroit Style Mix -- was released six years later on Fantasy Records.

A Number Of Names - Sharevari ... [1981-82]

Along with Cosmic Cars, another infinitely important song in the evolution of techno was called SharevariThis song was another homegrown creation from Detroit producers  known as A Number Of Names.  Along with Cybotrons initial releases on Deep Space Records (especially 1981's Alleys Of Your Mind), Sharevari is considered to be one of the most important landmarks in the birth of what we know today as Detroit Techno.  History sounds good, doesn't it?

Nemesis - After The Storm ... [1989]

Nemesis was one of many aliases used by American house, techno and breakbeat producer Toyin Agbetu, who had a number of releases in the late 80's and early 90's under this moniker.  After the Storm is a simple but powerful house track that moved people emotionally and gained huge popularity during a time when Techno was gaining ground and competitng for the hearts of clubbers on the dance floor.  Toyin released a number of albums as Nemesis, gaining great popularity during this period and continues to retain a cult following for his amazing house music.

Precious - Definition Of A Track ... [1989]

Released on Big Beat Records in 1989, In Motion by female rapper Precious was to become a major house shaker.  Track B1 on this release was produced by Cassio WareDerek-A-Jenkins and Dwayne "Spen" Richardson and would become the Classic House tune known more commonly as: The Backroom ProjectDefinition Of A Track.  That bassline is just so incredibly greasy and hard hitting that it makes me want to load myself into a huge carnival cannon and shoot myself into a sleazy afterhours jam filled with dancing gnomes and less than savoury ladies.  Grime time bass line.

Model 500 - The Chase (Express Mix) ... [1989]

Following his break from Cybotron and partner Richard Davis in 1983 -- a resulrt of creative headbutting -- Juan Atkins began a solo career producing techno under the moniker Model 500, while Davis took Cybotron on a path towards a more "rock and roll" sound.  Cybotron was quickly forgotten, while Atkins flourished on his own, leading into the mid and late 80's, at which time he produced his most influential and renowned work.  Although not his biggest track during this time, The Chase was none the less one of his most popular and best selling releases.  It is definitely my favourite Juan Atkins tune, along with No UFO's, released in 1985 on another Atkin's label Metroplex.

Model 500 - No UFOs ... [1985]

Don't forget to show that cybo-swagger when you dance to Juan's killer tracks....you know, like this.
