Collect Calls On The Lam

2 Samples of Upcoming Originals by Sean Roman & Dick Diamonds on Molotov21

New Release forthcoming from Sean Roman & Dick Diamonds on Brazilian up and coming label Molotov21 out of Rio de Janeiro.  The label is owned by Toucan member Bernardo Campos and Pedro Mezzonato, and boasts a pretty strong lineup which includes releases by sick artists such as Beep Dee, S.K.A.M., Diego Moreno, Rockerr (Ricardo Estrella), Nytron, Matt Fear, Adam Banks, Allan Villar (Pimp$hit) and others.

This will be Sean's second EP for the label, his first being the highly successful Staring EP.  Molotov has put out a lot of fire in the past year, and their label has risen to become one of Brazils premier forces in its growing house and techno market.  We are super stoked to be working with our friends over at Molotov.

We are even more excited that we have two unbelievable remixers on this EP doing their own personal take of the releases title track Collect Call. BUBBA (Runnin Wild, Hot Creations) and his production partner T-BONE (Extended Play, aka Timmy Steward of Jet Project) each did a remix of one of our favorite productions to date. It is an absolute honour to have these two amazing artists and good friends of ours included on this EP.  There is some more info on the release and media below.  We hope you dig this one, we loved doing it.

CHOO....CHOO!!

This Friday, The Deep North has got something super special planned for all you house heads out there. We're bringing together four deep house/techno players in the game to do things right for our 27th Late & Deep spectacular, at an all new location. The venue is two floors and has just revamped its soundsytem. This sounds like an equation for a serious party shindig. So, all you dance fiends out there, get prepared, it's a short work week and then the jam goes down Friday night. If you're not already anticipating it, listen to some of these mixes from our headliners to test the waters. Then, you'll know what's in store for you. The mixes speak for themselves.

Up first is a tasty treat from Throne Of Blood co-owner James Friedman:

Follow that up with an exclusive mix that Toronto's proud to be own Basic Soul Unit did for us:

And top it off with this beauty from Populette:

That should be enough to tide you over until the big night. So, now I'm sure I'll see all of you out Friday night supporting the Toronto good music scene.

Here's how to get in the know: Event Link

Wreckno

Blawan + Pariah = Wreckno

This is, admittedly, the first time I have heard of this duo named Karenn, aka, Blawan & Pariah.  Doesn't matter.  What is important to note though, is just how hard these two hit it during this all analog set at the Boiler Room in the Netherlands.  Super duper duo synchronicity at times.  Crazy.

Tonight: Kate Simko + Hermans @ Wrongbar

Kate Simko plays Wrongbar tonight with Deep North's Hermans and Platform resident Gera. Click the image to visit the event page.

Tonight myself and Max the Fax - - aka the Hermans - - have the absolute pleasure of playing alongside one of our favorite producers from Chicago, Kate Simko, at one of Toronto's favourite clubs Wrongbar.  We are super stoked on this and can't wait to see her play.  The promoter of the show, Houseaddict, wrote a cool blog post on their website about us, and included an exclusive mix we did specifically for this show.  Below is the quoted article and mixtape, we thought it was super nice of the Houseaddict crew and wanted to thank them for the booking and kind words.  Make sure you sign up for reduced guestlist before 12am by clicking the following link for Reduced Guestlist @ Kate Simko.

QUOTED Post @ Houseaddict.com:

" Let’s just start this blog off proper shall we?  The Deep North are a fucking motley crew!!!  They’re a team of three dudes who chose the underground of Toronto as their outlet for creativity, and that comes in the form of producing unique tracks, and showcasing them at uber-unusual venues such as basement bars in Chinatown, and most recently, defunct loft spaces on Colleges St. in the heart of Little Italy.  Their marquee series, as many of you will already know, is LATE & DEEP.

Two of the three homies, Dick Diamonds and Max The Fax, joined forces to start producing asThe Hermans.  These two dudes completely ignore any conventional rules of mixing music and genres.  In fact, they tend to create sets that really are hard to pigeon hole into a single genre.  One might say that’s what makes them who they are.  Hell, why bother talking about it, when we can just listen to a sample they made exclusively for our crew:

Hermans - Two House Addicts Bound by Sound >>> [Download]

When we spoke to the dynamic duo back in April about performing with Kate Simko on June 22 @Wrongbar, well they jumped off the computer screen and gave us a huge hug.  Man, if that ain’t dedication to the cause, we really don’t know what is.  This event kicks off our collaborative series,SUMMER MIXTAPE SESSIONS (SMS), a four-month residency at Wrongbar  : )

The Hermans will have the set time just prior to Kate taking over the booth, so please join us on the dance floor to get things moving early.

SMS aims to offer Toronto a summer of performances with underground artists who demonstrate how being different should be the norm.  All in the heart of Parkdale…

Caution – you may have a hangover after this one  ; )"

Thanks so much for the kind words guys!!

Here is a recently uploaded set by Kate Simko which we found on her soundcloud.  You can also check out an article we wrote on Kate last year by clicking here.  Enjoy, and we hope to see you tonight!!

Who The Fuck Is Owen Howells?

Howells minds the techno gapFor the last little while I've been exchanging tunes, ideas and feelings with UK producer and founding member of Shades of Grey, Owen Howells.  Oddly he contacted me via soundcloud about doing some work and despite having yet to even begin anything (I'm still waiting on a trademark backwards vocal creep), the momentum he's building between his parties, label and releases has me all giddy to link in the fall.  Described by IDJ Mag as "genre agnostic and forward thinking", his productions  ignore traditional definitions of techno, deep & tech-house.  Owen's percussive drive has a touch of pure creep which results in a fun yet uniquely grinding sound....this deadly combo can be found on a growing number of labels including Wunderkammer, Sounds of Juan, Muchiq, Brikbat, Shades of Grey, Zipped and Nutation.  His latest You EP, out Monday on Trendy Mulletfeatures a personal favorite, Back 2 You, along with And Then I which between the original and DJ Da's mix, will stun even the weirdest mother fucker.  So check this twisty head's growing catalogue and see why creep is the new black.

Techno Virtuoso

I think I took my first piano lesson at the age of seven, at my first live performance a year later I absolutely murdered Eensy Weensy Spider and was convinced my path to stardom had begun.  After 6 months my skills began to plateau with Pop Goes the Weasel, so deciding it was best to stop turning sheet music into shit music (I blame my wench of an instructor), I announced my official retirement.  The same unfortunate tale cannot be said about Francesco Tristano, this 29 year old classical pianist's work calls all prior definitions of techno into question with his highly original take on electronic, piano bench house?  I picked up his Idiosynkrasia EP a couple months ago and it's simply stellar, the InFiné release includes remixes by Ben Klock, Ark, Fumiya Tanaka and others.  Anyway I'll shut up and let this gifted bastard's music do the talking, be sure to check the full live show with Carl Craig at the bottom...enjoy.

#SimTO: Independent Electronic Music Festival

..
#simTO looks to be a promising contender in the year of festival upstarts in Toronto. Click the image to check out the website and don't forget to grab a super cheap earlybird ticket!!

If you haven't heard yet, The Deep North is one of the players - - along with breakandenter and Hushlamb - - behind this summers Sound In Motion Electronic Music Festival, a totally independent project headed by the brilliant people at Studiofeed which will be bringing some seriously amazing music and art to Canada's multicultural capital of tunage.

The three-day festival will focus on electronic music, namely house and techno - - but expect more than that - - and is scheduled to run from Friday July 13 through to Sunday July 15.  The festival is unique in that it is a not-for-profit event which spans three days, is held at various downtown locations - - including Sugar Beach (1000+ Capacity) and a huge warehouse location - - showcases a large number of local artists as well as an exciting lineup of international acts into the mix.  The best part of this event is that the festival, unlike some other "festivals" happening this summer, is a completely independent undertaking - - there is no bullshit here - - free of any corporate funding, relying solely on the time and effort of a music loving community.  That's what we are talking about, baby!!

While the complete lineup and schedule of events has not been uncovered yet - - read: more to come - - below I will quickly list some of the exciting acts that will be rocking one of several festival events happening Friday night, Saturday, Saturday Night and Sunday.
