FEAST TIME

The Deep North's resident Sean Roman will be playing at Toronto's esteemed FOOTWORK club alongside heavyweight MANIK on April 28th. The Deep North's Dick Diamonds will be an official host of the night, representing the family for this special event. Click the image to see the event on RA.Sean Roman has been the topic of much buzz all over the internet as he continues to blaze a serious trail through the world of house music after a strong showing in 2011, both as a solo artist and as a member of the trio White Lions.  The talented Toronto producer and Deep North Resident finished his warm-up year (2011) with "Sarah's Song", a big house release for Hot Creations sub-label Hot Waves and a nice remix of Deepchild's track "The Suffering Ones" on Thoughtless Music around the same time.  But this was just the beginning.

Enter 2012.  Sean Roman decided that taking a breath was not an option and has shown the world that he is going all the way.  The monster-in-making kicked off the new year with his Sinnaman EP on Assembly Records out of the UK - - his second release on the label.  Gate crashing was not enough and the smoke signals continued with Sean's next couple of releases on a pair of Latin American labels which I believe are going to become huge names in the house music industry - - Neim (Mexico) and Molotov21 (Brazil) - - before many people realize they even exist.  His This Thang EP on Neim was simply fantastic, as was his Staring EP - - released about 2 weeks before - - on Molotov21.  Both EPs shot up the best sellers charts across the globe, a trend which I have no doubt will continue.

Killer, I know.  But hold up, hold up.  The mayhem continued yesterday with what could be Sean's highest profile release to date.   Sean fired off a huge package yesterday - - including remixes by Hot Creations heavy hitters MANIK and Waifs and Strays - - for the UK's newest imprint called Feast Records.  Feast is a new label - - "debutant", if you will - - headed by Act Natural boss Jamie Ward and named after the infamous party series of the same name.  Talk about a fucking huge release.  Jamie Ward gets kudos from me on this one, and this EP is sure to make waves given the strong reputation behind all of the names involved in putting this one together.  The release is sure to get an instant boost from MANIK's involvement - - the dude just blew minds with his new release "You Know What it's Like" on Real Tone Records with Burnski and Deep North favorite Gerd.  Fuck off Sean, you bastard.

Just joking.  We are throwing it up for our brother Sean Roman, a hard working Canadian artist who will make it to the top - - mark my words - - if he continues to push the limits as he has over the past two years.  The sky is the limit, but unfortunately for the sky, Sean Roman is a god damn intergalactic rocketship powered with boundary-smashing rocket fuel.  Move the fuck out of the way Buzz Lightyear, Sean Roman is coming through.

Catch Sean Roman & MANIK @ Footwork on April 28th for the next popular Modern Love Affair event here in Toronto.  The Deep North will be co-hosting the event and I expect all real house lovers and even wannabe hipsters to be there...or risk missing out on one hell of a show.  Email guestlist@footworkbar.com to get your sorry ass on the guestlist.  Get ready for a heatstorm.

Manik the Maniac

I know this is a bit slow on the draw, but cut me some slack - - it took me a month to get enough money to buy the new Manik (NYC) album Armies Of The Night, released last month on Ovum Recordings.  I have been a fan of this hyper-talented American producer for about a year now, but his last release has solidified his spot as one of the artists in the deep/tech house game which I respect the most.  One complete listen through this LP and it is not hard to see why I would say this - - sheer versatility and top notch-production that is almost unmatchable.

Armies Of The Night is special because it caters to the taste of virtually everyone, and any lover of electronic music would be hard pressed to not find a track on this release they did not love.  This guy just stood up and pushed out a serious melieux of tracks spanning several genres - - house, tech house, deep house, breaks, hip hop, nu-disco, indie dance, chilled out house and electronica - - all the while maintaining a coherent sound that ties all the tracks together in a unmistakable unity that screams "YO, WE WERE MADE BY MANIK".

Unable to decide which tracks to share off the album, I went with the first three names that came to mind.  Here are two - - of a handful  - - freaking nasty deep house bites (City Kids & Streets Are Deep) found on the album, which, along with the nu-disco song Delorean Soho show what I mean about genre-hopping while remaining true to one coherent baseline sound.  Killer.
