Fur Coats & Dinosaurs

Image by the wonderful Merry Sommers. Click picture to visit her site!

We're back!  It's been a bit busy over here are The Deep North HQ, and last weekends amazing show with Remain was so amazing that I was guttered for the 2 days afterwards.  Speaking of Remain, his new EP on My Favorite Robot Records is now available for purchase.  Go grab yourself a copy of the "La Rixerelease, you will not be dissapointed - - the remixes are serious!

I wanted to speak briefly about a hot recent release on Crosstown Rebels by Venezuelan artists that go by the names Fur Coat (Delete & Israel Sunshine)and Argenis Brito.  The release, Space Ballad came out on my birthday (October 3rd), and is the 83rd release by the popular Crosstown brand.  This tune is fresh as all hell, and I have been bumping it like a madman for the past two weeks, and I am sure you will be too if you have not heard this yet.  The Deep House original is a slow starter, only heating up after the 3 minute mark, and UK remixers TEED took it upon themselves to kick the heat up a notch after one minute in their house mix of the jam.  I prefer the original mix, but both versions are wicked.  I will share a 128kbps version of the TEED remix with you all, I hope you enjoy, and sorry for the wait my friends!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY BUBBS

Our man Bubba has just turned 328 years old.  Dude makes some killer tunes for someone who lives longer than Galapagos tortoises.  The industry has changed a lot since the late 1600's, and we applaud him for remaining relevant despite initial doubts by the late king's retainers.  Wishing Bubbz a year of dream fulfillment and happiness.  Keep kicking the shit out of earholes and all that - - we love ya buddy!

Here are a couple of hot candles for you all to enjoy on his special day.  We have a nice Bubba & T-Bone remix and some funky house tunes from Scoper & Bubba which are free, downloadable 320's.  Now that is a real birthday gift.

UPDATE:  Bubba has put up an amazing track up for FREE LIMITED TIME DOWNLOAD on soundcloud, and he has told me to share it with you, the readers of The Deep North. Get that!

LIMITED TIME FREE DOWNLOAD:

Bubba - We need a Break (Limited free Download) by B.U.B.B.A

Rough Tough River

Anja Schneider is without question one of the best house producers  in the world, well, at least my little world, but most likely the bigger one too.   What I like most about this gal is that she is a god damn hustler, making moves that I couldn't even dream about having the balls to make.  The Mobilee founder is always hard at work, signing world class artists and showing the world why she is a world class businesswoman and artist herself.

Her newest release came out a few days ago on - - you guessed it - - Mobilee and is called HELLO BOY!  The three song EP is a nice release, however it is definitely not the producers best.  I personally thought that the title track, while a nice tune, was just a bit on the uneventful side for me, and left me wanting more.  Luckily the other two tracks, especially Let Me Out, delivered the goods and left me happy with the latest from one of the greatest.  Download my favorite tune of the three after you listen to Rio Bravo.

Love in Da Club

Graphic PDA in clubs: not just for semi-skanky top 40 hits! Seriously though, this new EP, Club Sex, from Lee Daines got me grooving this morning. It's nice to find cool deep house like this on gross rainy days (like this one) after excellent weekends (like last one). It makes the work week seem a little less miserable.

Anyway, enough complaining. Lee Daines released Club Sex earlier this month on Deep Edition. This UK label is known for its slick, intense deep house and claims to focus "more on the music quality rather than their name." Regardless of their intentions, they put out some cool music.

Lee Daines, like his label, produces deep, funky house music out of Essex, Britain. Although not widely known, Daines is definitely on the rise. I'm very interested to see where this gentleman goes.

Check out some of the tracks!

I also found this lovely new track he released yesterday - less deep but still awesome.

DRM018: Alicia Hush

As we prepare for our next Late & Deep event this Saturday, a couple of great gifts hav arrived from the event's headliners, Alicia Hush and production trio White Lions.  We are stoked that both have submitted exclusive mixes for our Deeply Rooted Mixtape series just in time to help stoke the fire of excitement as we get close to Saturday's festivities.

Alicia Hush - Kissing Booth Criminal >>> [BUY]

First up is minimal/house producer and DJ Alicia Hush.  Hush is one of Toronto's best afterhours DJs and co-founder of Hushlamb Productions along with close friend and promoter Sarah Lamb.  Hushlamb - - a portmanteau which combines the names of it's founders - - is a promotions company and crew that was "born out of a shared desire to create space in [Toronto] for the style of music we vibe off of, and [a] place for emerging artists to be heard".  For the past few years, Hushlamb - - which also includes producers Talal & Zoi, Ana+one, and Zaid Edghaim - - has been throwing top notch music-focused, dance floor friendly events which always have an amazing vibe and mind blowing sound.  Alicia and her crew bring Toronto some of the most exciting underground house, techno and minimal producers out there.  Trust me, this crew is a vital pillar in our cities underground EDM scene.  Read more about them on their official website.

Alicia Hush talks with Toronto's media freaks over at StudioFeed.  StudioFeed seeks to give a greater voice to independent Artists and musicians from Toronto.  Check them out!

Hushed Homes

While there is no doubting that Toronto is a hotbed for diverse talents in electronic music, I have to admit I usually find myself looking past our borders for new music.  Maybe it's to further the experience of "otherness" that the best electronic music elicits, but some of the brightest new emerging talents of our fair city really cause me to question the validity of this argument.

Kevin Mcphee's first two releases are both on UK based labels located at the heart of a scene being admired from across the globe.  While his first release to me perhaps demonstrated a bit too much influence from certain other producers from the global bass scene, his more recent release on Bristol's Idle Hands label finds him with a late-night house sound incorporating a unique sound design all his own.

Aside from his increasingly interesting productions, Kevin is a killer DJ who plays all vinyl sets with many of his own tunes cut to acetate, and I highly recommend catching him at this week's Galapagos party opening up for Bok Bok as a precursor to The Weekend's Festivities.

Three Free Bits Of Heat

Picture by Merry Sommers, the queen of photos.Ok I lied, it's actually five (5) free bits... but before we get to those, read the following text...

The tunes are only 128kbps, so when you are done testing these joints, get out there and buy the 320.  We always provide links to an online retailer where you can purchase the songs at top quality.  These  artists work hard to bring you sweet ass tracks like these, so show some love here and there, when possible.

If you are one of the many people who never buy music, make sure you dont' miss a show by your favourite EDM producer(s) when they happen to come to your town.  This is how many producers, if not the majority, make their money these days.  Support the artists and make sure you hit the odd performance to "show" -- pun fully intended -- your support for artists and the scene in general.

With no further ado...

Jamie Jones is a clear favourite for me.  This man simply has some of the gnarliest, most driving bass lines in the game, and the moves he is making right now with his labels, his production and his influence are almost unparallelled.  This guy is "the crack", as the Irish might say.  Make sure you check out his recent mixtape for Fabric, which came out last month, and has, of course, an amazing selection of tracks.  Shouts go out to our homies The White Lions, whose song "DePalma" (MFR) was included in the mix.  Good look.

Mobilee's rebel child and family member, Leena Music, released an amazing EP called This Time by Germany's Jona, a house producer who can bring you the goods whether its deep house or tech house.  I just stumbled across this EP during a dig, and I love it.  Dont stop here, check out the other star song on this release, the title track This Time.

German weir-duo Moenster (Lexy & Gunjah) brought the heat with their EP, That Girl, released on their own label Moensterbox, this month.  The label is new, but I was suprised to see some seious artists on the roster.  Very interesting duo here, keep six on these lads.  Feel the driving bassline drop in at 3:37 in this one.  Super good, but again, make sure you do not miss the title track (ft. Spoony Talker), I almost think I like it best.  Work that box.

I like the original track by Daft Punk a lot, so it's just natural that one would like this.  All natural enjoyment.  Benoit & Sergio are two Washinton DC producers who like to make some weird ass shit.  Like, they are complete weirdos, and people eat it up.  I love that.  It's almost as if the more weird they get, the more radical they sound.  No wonder they got signed to visionquest - - they fit fit right in.

Andy Kohlman is an amazing producer.  Minimalist, Techno is not something that I usually love, but Kohlmann's production is almost always lovable, especially his releases on Lordag.  This remix was released in 2009, and until recently, was the only production I had ever heard by Jenn.  Turns out she has released a lot of good stuff.

A Favourite Mixing Machine

Photo by Merry Sommers. Click the image to see her website.

I am sure most of you have heard of My Favorite Robot, a production/DJ trio and label based out of Toronto and Montreal, Canada.  As a highly popular production and DJ force - - which has releases on Crosstown Rebels, No. 19, Tenampa and of course MFR - - My Favorite Robot is headed by Jared Simms and his partners James Teej and Voytek Korab.  All three men are amazing in their own right, but put these killers together and you have a nearly unstoppable house music force capable of decimating any dance floor with sickening late night vibes.

As an imprint, MFR has been on fire as well, releasing hot music from numerous massive deep house producers such as Adultnapper, Droog, Jonny White, Jordan Dare, Jozif, Kenny Glasgow, Nitin, Noah Pred, Sasse, Sid LeRock, Sean Roman and White Lions ... to name but a few.

Check out Team Robot's ultra hot August mix, which I stumbled across on the MFR Records' Soundcloud a couple of days ago.  Pull up your socks, this one is serious.

The tracklist can be found here.

You Can Call Me Sleazy

I am Bea Sleazy, the newest contributor for The Deep North and I happen to enjoy house music. It's something I came to terms with long ago and am now forcing upon everyone else by way of the internet. Thank god for the internet. Anyway, I tend to lean towards deep or tech house with a little disco or soul here and there. Lately I’ve been pretty mired in getting ready for Frosh Week and the start of school but I managed to find a couple cool tracks to show off.

First up, I’ve got the track that put UK producer Jon Rundell on the electronic dance music map earlier this summer. It’s new, it’s exciting, it’s tech house and who doesn’t like tech house? But seriously, this guy makes cool music and you should definitely check out this song.

Jon Rundell - Knick Knack (Original Mix) by RichR

This is more awesome tech house, this time from Italian trio Macromism. This track was released in late July on Rawthentic Music and I’m really feeling the vocals.

Macromism - Groover [SC-EDIT] by Rawthentic Music

I love deep house. There’s something about deep, soulful music like this that’s hard to dislike. This is the first track that Noir & Haze put out together and comes from Noir’s own label, Noir Music. It’s the first single from Noir’s upcoming album, due out in early 2012

Noir & Haze - Around (Solomun Vox Remix) by irina

This fine number by Germany’s Agaric is so feel-good it almost hurts. It’s a wee bit drawn out for my taste but it’s great anyway. It’s fairly down-tempo and mellow but just fast and soulful enough to make a body boogie.

Agaric - No Way I Know I Feel (Axel Boman remix) - Ovum Recordings by axelboman

That's all I've got for now. Hope to see you all this Saturday at Bunda for DJ Fame!

S.A.S. = Such Awesome Stuff?

"S.A.S. is Subb-an and Shelton, and it’s our alias for the more housey, broken beat, Chicago, after party style tunes. It is more edits based but you will hear in some of them that the music has been totally reproduced, we’’ve got loads of S.A.S stuff to come this year"

- Subb-an, in his interview for The Burlington Project

It took me a while to figure it out, but S.A.Ssimply stands for Subb-an and Sheltonand I had been vibing off of this duo's collaboration work well before I had any idea who the two producers behind the project were.  Knowing who S.A.S. really are has put all the mysterious pieces into place for me, as the talented and extremely versatile duo produces everything from nu-disco to deep house to hip hop.

I am a fan of both producers' solo work, and the two have been on a tremendous heat streak with awesome releases on labels such as Foot & Mouth and Hot Natured.  Their latest release on Foot & Mouth, the Are You Satisfied EP, is more than satisfying, if I may say so myself.  The four edits on the release are funky, fresh and banging dancefloor fire starters.   Check out You Gotta Think from their latest release, as well as some solo productions from each producer before digging into this S.A.S. Mix made for the Soulclap Blog.  Such Awesome Stuff.
