House Music Legend: Gemini

Spencer Kincy aka Gemini dropped out of the house music world mysteriously. But his legend lives on.

Just got this 1990's mix of house legend Spencer "Gemini" Kincy from resident advisor, which linked to a R_co mix on soundcloud.  For those unfamiliar with the enigmatic house producer, who suddenly vanished from the music industry without a trace, check out an article I wrote on his work a while back.  This guy is phenomenal, and this mix is pure class!  A-Grade beef.

Free Mastered Exclusive 320 From Thoughtless!

A Free Exclusive Remix directly from the mastering labs at Thoughtless Music. GNARLY! Exciting news tonight people, as we are happy to announce a brand new exclusive offer from our friends over at Thoughtless Music.  The label wants to share some important information regarding their latest release, which we recently wrote about two days ago.

Deepchild - The Suffering Ones (Original Mix)

As most of you know from - - hopefully - - reading the blog regularly, Thoughtless released a sick package exclusively on Beatport consisting of 8 remixes of Deepchild's tune "The Suffering Ones", which included remixes by two Deep North resident artists: Phantom Ambulance and Sean Roman.  You all should know - - and if not, will be interested to note - - that our resident contributor and long time co-founder Max the Fax is 1/2 of the production duo Phantom Ambulance as well.  Below are some interesting details which we touched on before regarding the release, in a somewhat expanded form.  Please take a moment to read the following as we think it is important and very relevant to those interested in the label, it's artists, and social causes.

THOUGHTLESS MUSIC SUPPORTS THE OCCUPY MOVEMENT WITH NEW RELEASE

"Record label set to donate first 99 sales of Deepchild's "The Suffering Remixed" to #OccupyToronto, and 1% of sales after that...

Toronto label Thoughtless Music has just released a remix pack for the smash single by Deepchild, “The Suffering Ones.” Keeping with the spirit of this song - which takes “Why are we the ones who suffer?” as its rallying refrain - we have decided to donate the label’s proceeds from the first 99 sales of the remix pack to the Occupy Movement; specifically, to our hometown chapter: Occupy Toronto. After the first 99 sales, Thoughtless will continue to donate 1% of all sales of the remix pack to #Occupy.

The Occupy Movement is currently facing eviction and oppression throughout North America. The movement is still finding its voice and direction. Here at Thoughtless we support this process and view the process as a fundamental right. Rather than find fault with the movement, we would like to see it grow and mature into an influential force for those with no voice and limited agency. We feel the Occupy mentality is vital to maintain in order to affect positive change within our world. Some have chosen to condemn the movement for its lack of organization and leaders; here at Thoughtless we applaud the inclusive spirit and horizontal power structure the Occupy Movement represents. We prefer to find ways to support this unprecedented movement rather than criticize or tear it down.

The remix pack for “The Suffering Ones” includes fresh interpretations of the Deepchild track from Tim Xavier, [a]pendics shuffle, XI, Noah Pred, Arthur Oskan, Gingy & Bordello, Sean Roman, and Phantom Ambulance. Purchase the entire remix pack on Beatport.com at a special bundle price and support independent music, thought and culture."

Click here to check out the release.  We think it is amazing that a music label which already faces a tough market every day is still in tune with social causes that are real and happening in our own city - - and trying to help make a change.  To learn more about the Occupy Movement and how Thoughtless is involved, check out: http://thoughtlessmusic.com · http://occupytoronto.org

Thoughtless Music artist and Deep North co-founder Max the Fax also did an official remix of the Deepchild tune, and it is wicked!  In order to wet your whistle and stimulate peoples interest in the cause the label has decided to give it away for FREE to the world, exclusively through The Deep North Blog.  Wickkkkkkked!

Right click the sponsored link below, and download the track for free from the Thoughtless website by choosing "Save Linked Content As....".

The Foundation (001)

Spencer Kincy, aka Gemini, was a legend in the making.  The American native was a Chicago DJ in high demand, and a seriously talented and prolific producer who made tunes which were before their time and which still blow up the dancefloor as hard as they did in the 90's.  This guy is a phenomenal.

So who is Spencer Kincy?  5 Magazine tells us:

"Spencer Kincy was giant in Chicago's House Music revival - part of the second wave of younger DJs and producers that took the music of the early 1980s, rubbed it up and dropped it in places like 500 West Cermak, Medusa's and the Vault. A lot of people who are now superstars of the scene - Mark Farina, Sneak, Derrick Carter, and dozens of others - were a part of that movement, too. Spencer released a number of tracks on Relief, Planet E, Cajual, Peace Frog - labels representing the classics of that era - and he usually recorded under the name Gemini.

And as gritty, as grimy, as jarring and noisy as his productions could be, he could also make them sing. His collaboration with JT Donaldson, the Duality EP, wasn't just a play on his DJ name. A track like "Changing Times" was deep, controlled, almost gentle, presaging some Deep House currents by nearly a decade. And he could follow it up with a jarring track of completely abstract sounds - a thunder that would shake the 16 inch reinforced concrete walls of a warehouse. He could work with live musicians or filter a disco loop, pound it into the ground and make it more inspirational than any gospel choir, as he did on "Stand Up" (Relief). The output was eclectic, and sometimes it missed its mark, but he always pushed the envelope forward."

When listening to some of his tracks, it's easy to want to run out and buy some, or the whole collection for that matter.  It's not that easy, as most of it is on vinyl and out of print - - and Kincy isn't interested in having more printed or released digitally.  Robsoul recordings did put out a Tribute EP this year though, so definitely check that out.

Fact is, Spencer Kincy inexplicably dropped out of the game and disappeared, obviously leaving a huve void in the scene, and a lot of questions and speculation.  From my own research, and by reading some articles on 5 Magazine, people still don't know why such a genius would just fall off the way he did.  No one knows exactly where he went to, although death is out of the question according to some sources.  Either way, this guy has left a major mark in House music, it's just a shame he didn't stick around to make more of it.  Gemini, come back and make us some more heat, please!

You can see and hear lot's more of Spencer Kincy's awesome music here, at a Facebook Group dedicated to this legendary House producer.  Get that.

Phantom Ambulance EP Release with Deepchild, Fairmont, Noah Pred & More!

Tomorrow is shaping up to be a BIG night in Toronto as we prepare for the official Medicine EP release party for The Deep North's dynamic resident duo Phantom Ambulance (comprised of Max the Fax and Max Lucas).  The party is extra special because the party - - hosted by Thoughtless Music - - has the boys playing alongside the super talented UK producer Deepchild and Canadian electronic heros Fairmont, Noah Pred and Alicia Hush.  Now that is what I like to call an all-star lineup.

The Deep North Crew will be in attendance for this amazing show of talent on Friday at Li'ly Lounge, and we hope to see some of our readers out there.  In fact, we have a special guestlist for those who can be at the venue before 11pm - - all you must do is "like" the Deep North Fanpage and read the information provided on how to get on our guestlist.  Make sure you come and say hi to the crew!

For more info on this event, make sure you check the Facebook event page and the Resident Advisor event pages.

In the meantime, check out some sweet tunes by some of the artists playing the show.

Randovids

Here.  A few songs I love.....to bits.  Why?  I just do.  I would marry each one of them if it was possible.

Jamie Principle - A Cold World >>> [Vinyl]

Just nothing less than a stone cold classic house track.  Pure, unbridled heat.  What a beautiful track - - respects to Mr. Principle for changing my life with this tune.  Woah.

Seuil (ft. Jaw) - Ultravision > > > [BUY]

French producer Seuil released this track on Supplement Facts in May, and it has become one of my most adored tracks this - - now quickly passing - - summer.  This guy is a creative monster on that production tip...creating several leviathans of dance including this massive tune with vocalist Jaw.  Bigger than big type deal.

Check out what Greg Sawyer of Resident Advisor thought of the Ultra Vision EP.  I personally think he gave the EP an undeservedly low rating given how absolutely wonderful this emotional peice is... I would personally go with 4 stars because Seuil got it right on this tune.  So right.

Kikumoto Allstars - Warehouse Days > > > [BUY]

This song was released over a year ago now on Kikumoto Allstars' album House Music I guess one could say I am a bit late with this one.   I don't even know what the fucking warehouse days were for god's sake... but I am gonna guess big raves in the 1990s or something.  Who knows....  I know one thing - -   I don't know anything about it.  Either way - - many of this Australian's tracks are great, especially this one, a slow roller with an infectiously catchy melody.

dOP - Your Sex (Art Department's Shades OF Gotica Remix) > > > [BUY]

What can we say about dOP and Art Department that has not been said by someone else in a much more eloquent manner, with much more finesse? Absolutely nothing.  This is a great remix, especially since I personally do not care much for the Original by dOP.

Amiga Bounce

Check out this hyper catchy track by retro-lover Legowelt - - my favourite track made on an Amiga 1200 computer.   The tune is called "Driving Through An Amiga Forest" and you can read a nice review on 2009's Amiga Railroad Adventures on the Mishka blog right over here.  Music for moving those buns.
