DRM032: POPULETTE [MAX PASK]

Yes, those are the faces of Populette's Max and Andrew on a sheet of acid. Populette will be at Late & Deep tomorrow night. Click picture for more info.

We usually don't post two Deeply Rooted Mixtapes as close together as we are today, but we have to put up Max Pask of Populette's mix in order to get it up before he plays LATE & DEEP #12 tomorrow.  Max is one half of NYC duo Populette which has original and remix releases on super cool labels such as Throne Of Blood, Peacefrog and Turbo.  What we like about Populette is their originality and creativity, something that is often spoken about but rarely practiced.  We cannot wait to see Max's set this Saturday night, he told me that he has prepared a proper shake session to get us all greased late night.  Super stoked for this one!!

The Expansion of the Roman Empire

Deep North Resident Sean Roman's sex-inducing music has been making waves across the world.

The Deep North's resident nu-disco and deep house producer and DJ Sean Roman has been on an relentless tear over the past year and 2011 was a testament that the 30-year old producers hard work in the studio is paying off.  Sean Roman, a native from Toronto, was once best known as DJ Mutt - - a DnB producer with numerous releases known across the globe - - but now it seems like this might be changing.

In 2011, Sean made his mark in the house community, catching the edge of the huge wave that was somethere between deep house and nu-disco, popularized by people like Jamie Jones, Lee Foss and their Hot Creations artists in what many called a "renaissance period" for house music in the UK and Europe.  2011 was a massive year for the artist, who went from having a few house releases to now having well over 10, and more then a handful in the tube.  2011 saw Sean and group the White Lions - - with long time friends Rob Steal & Cody LG - - signing to labels such as Hot Waves, My Favorite Robot, Fabric, Top Billin, Thoughtless Music, Assembly Records, Overcross and more.

We here at The Deep North have been longtime supporters of Sean's and the White Lions, were super excited when both agreed to join our Resident DJ Roster last Fall, after having played a number of events with us and developing a close relationship that has continued to grow.  Toronto still does not fully realize that they have a possible future star in their own city, but 2012 will see a lot more of Sean and the White Lions rocking dancefloors across the city.  The White Lions are going to be playing alongside BUBBA of Hot Creations/Klasse/Extended Play for April's edition of Late & Deep.  Shit is going to blow minds.

Two Unsigned Tracks:  Given to us by Sean last year, both tracks are unreleased and are available to be picked up by interesed labels.  For more information contact us.

Sean Roman - All The Girls (Deep North Exclusive) >>> Unreleased.

Sean Roman - Quirks (Deep North Exclusive) >>> Unreleased

2012 will be an even bigger year for the emerging star and news of new releases continue to confirm  this.  His hot new release Sinnaman on Assembly Records is now sitting at #8 on Juno's Deep House Charts, continuing to climb.  Sean will be the first release coming out on Jamie Ward's (the owner of Act Natural) new imprint Feast Records (FEAST001), which will include two originals and remixes by both MANIK and the Waifs and Strays.  Sean also has signed with the Mexican imprint Neim Records, which is known for harbouring sleazy beat boys such as Miguel Puente, Wildkats, Alexis Raphael, Louie Fresco and Jay Haze.  There are other releases in the tube which I will not mention in the interest of those involved, but let me tell you that it is more than exciting to say the least.

Sean Roman - This Thang EP >>> [BUY IT]

The White Lions have also kicked into 2012 with a super cool release of their amazing track H-Job on Canada'sl My Favorite Robot Records' seventh Stimulus Package compilation.  This big tune, despite having been bouncing aroung the net for quite some time, took a suprisingly long time to be signed, but we are happy that this greasy poolside beat was finally picked up and will be getting buns bouncing from Miami to Moscow.  We are super proud of both Sean and the Lions, and we are certain that this year will continue to see them push forward, and before you know it, you will be seeing them rocking dancefloors in Europe.

White Lions - H-Job >>> [BUY IT]

Make sure you check out Seans new FB Page along with his Twitter and Soundcloud, and while you are at it, do the same for the White Lions and The Deep North.  To end things off, here is the White Lions' exclusive DRM Mix they made for our blog last year - - hosted on the Lions' soundcloud.

DRM026: Sacha Robotti

DRM026 comes from Sacha "Ricotti" Robotti: a cheese loving, pasta making, music producer of the finest grade.

Deeply Rooted Mixtape Number 26 comes to us by way of Berlin, from a dear friend of ours Sacha Robotti, who we recently had the pleasure of hosting in Toronto last December for Late & Deep #8.  We flew Sacha into Toronto purely on the gut instinct that the producer must make a serious spaghetti Bolognese, given that he has some real Italian tomato sauce in his blood.  Luckily we were right, and a beautiful friendship was forged out of hearty pasta sauce, freestyle sessions and a serious love for beats.

But all bullshit aside, the Klasse Recordings artist turned out to be a great dude, and we got a long just fine.  Recently, Sacha has been putting out some serious dancefloor grease, both as one half of Robosonic, and on his own.  As Robosonic, and through Jackmode Agency's imprint of the same name, Sacha released "The Sweetness EP" which is a smooth groovin release with a remix by the talented J. Phlip.

Robosonic - The Sweetness (Original Mix) >>> [BUY IT]

On his home label Klasse Recordings - - a favourite of ours here in the pit - - Sacha and label boss Luca Lozano team up for their Joyride EP which samples some classic Tears for Fears bits for a thick serving of heat, much like his home made Ragu.

Luca Lozano, Sacha Robotti - Joyride >>> [BUY IT]

Equally tasty was the news Sacha recieved while in our company that his longtime favourite imprint - - VonStroke's Dirtybird - - would be releasing his funky tune "The Major" on the commemorative "Hatched Part 1compilation.  This is a solid release which features the fine work of Claude VonStroke, Eats Everything, Kingdom and A1 Bassline.  Check it out.

Sacha Robotti - The Major (Original Mix) >>> [BUY IT]

We are super fucking stoked to have a third exclusive from the Klasse Family - - along with DRM008 by Mr. Ho and DRM010 by BUBBA), and I must say that this one is one of my favourite submissions to date.  This shit has been on heat street's re-peat reel for real.  This is the fucking Ragu, right here.  Better then this, only comes from seeing the monster that is Sacha Robotti playing live.

Thanks Sacha, this one is Ace!

DRM022: BASIC SOUL UNIT

DRM 022: BASIC SOUL UNIT .... Toronto, Canada.

We return this week with another top notch exclusive mix for our Deeply Rooted Mixtape Series, an attempt by us to gather together exclusive mixes by some of the worlds most talented producers and DJs, along with a number of locals who we personally think are the bee's knees.  If you check out the DRM Page you can see that so far we have been doing a decent job collecting exclusives from all over the globe, having amassed an impressive number of mixes from some of the worlds hottest up and coming producers and selectors.

This week is a special one for us here at the Deep North, because we have acquired an exclusive mix from one of Canada's most talented producers, a man who has been causing a buzz in Europe for quite some time now, yet remains largely unknown by many of his countrymen.  Stuart Li - - better known as producer Basic Soul Unit - - keeps a low profile here in Toronto, and the hyper-talented producer of tech house, deep house, techno and electronica likes to keep it that way.  The family man recently came back from a tour in the EU, and has stated that the plans for his return in 2012 are already well underway.  This is not suprising when one takes a quick look at the sheer number of quality releases he has had on well respected labels such as New Kanada, Thoughtless, Osgut Ton, Defected, Mule, Versatile and Creme Organization, to name but a few.  His most recent release, Deep Diving, just came out on Berlin-based label New Kanada and has 4 wicked originals on it.  This one is definitely worth a look - - and a purchase, if you ask me.  We posted some of his work earlier this year too, which you can check out here and grab at lower quality (128kbps) for those long rides to work or school.

We are super stoked on this hour-long mix from a local hero and fellow musician, and are honoured to have him headlining out next Late & Deep (#7) event this month alongside some other killer locals who have been making waves lately: Jamie Kidd (of Metalogic) and the Deep North's own Phantom Ambulance (Max the Fax and Max Lucas).

Here are a few tunes by BSU, which we snapped up from his Soundcloud page, check them out before you get into his awesome DRM mix.

Dave Vega - Altars of magic (BSU mix) by Basic Soul Unit

DRM020: O-God

Picture by the wonderful Merry Somers. Click to visit her site.

Finally recovered from that seven hour period we call Late & Deep.  The Night was wonderful and two floors shook with basslines fighting for aural supremacy in a late night battle between long wavelengths and human flesh.  At least ten DJs unleashed their Fury upon wooden dancefloors surrounded by brick walls caked in white paint and glistening with the sweat of the latenight crowd.

The headliner of the second floor's Tech Room was our good pal DJ O-God, a party rocking DJ who made waves across the world with his recreation of last years summer favourite Barbara Striesand.  This man can play almost any genre and is a member of the Major Rager and Plugged Not Thugged camp.  Known for his signature chuckle, fullback baseball caps and love for that late night hustle, it was not a suprise that Owen Zahara approached me and asked if he could play one of our events.  I couldn't say anything but yes to a guy who loves rocking the dance floor while having a total blast, definitely something we value here at The Deep North.

We dropped two wicked mixes -- by Alicia Hush and the White Lions last week in anticipation of the monthly Jam, and since he was the 3rd to submit, we are packing his late night Tech House mix in now with the others as a promotional mix for the L & D Series.  You can catch our boy this coming Saturday for the Major Rager 2-Year Anniversary at Andy Poolhall, where he will spin alongside the other Major Rager residents Billionaire, Mandelephant, Mickey D and Ballistik.

DRM018: Alicia Hush

As we prepare for our next Late & Deep event this Saturday, a couple of great gifts hav arrived from the event's headliners, Alicia Hush and production trio White Lions.  We are stoked that both have submitted exclusive mixes for our Deeply Rooted Mixtape series just in time to help stoke the fire of excitement as we get close to Saturday's festivities.

Alicia Hush - Kissing Booth Criminal >>> [BUY]

First up is minimal/house producer and DJ Alicia Hush.  Hush is one of Toronto's best afterhours DJs and co-founder of Hushlamb Productions along with close friend and promoter Sarah Lamb.  Hushlamb - - a portmanteau which combines the names of it's founders - - is a promotions company and crew that was "born out of a shared desire to create space in [Toronto] for the style of music we vibe off of, and [a] place for emerging artists to be heard".  For the past few years, Hushlamb - - which also includes producers Talal & Zoi, Ana+one, and Zaid Edghaim - - has been throwing top notch music-focused, dance floor friendly events which always have an amazing vibe and mind blowing sound.  Alicia and her crew bring Toronto some of the most exciting underground house, techno and minimal producers out there.  Trust me, this crew is a vital pillar in our cities underground EDM scene.  Read more about them on their official website.

Alicia Hush talks with Toronto's media freaks over at StudioFeed.  StudioFeed seeks to give a greater voice to independent Artists and musicians from Toronto.  Check them out!

DRM 015: Driip

One more time, we are here.  Here at the mouth of the DRM machine, waiting to see what new and exclusive mix we will recieve from the belly of the beast.  I am stoked to share this next DRM mix with you guys because it comes from a young and talented DJ/producer known by two names: his formal, birth name, Brandon Sprouse, and his pseudonym "driip"which I happen to like quite a bit - - as it could mean a number of weird things, especially after delving into his dark, dirty and grimey taste in music.

Sprouse has often said that his signature sound is no-nonsense techno, the kind that keeps your head pointed downward in a dark room, freeing your mind from surrounding distractions while focusing it on the sounds that surround.  Dark, bass heavy techno music is the passion of this up and coming Toronto Native, and you can expect to hear a lot more about the design student's ascent through the techno ranks - - especially if he remains focused on his plan to move to Berlin in order to pursue a full blown career in music.

Brandon can be found posting as a contributing member of the active Toronto blog-squad ElectroTO.  Of course, that is when he is not producing sick music or embedding hot techno tracks on facebook for me to freak out over.  Now that you have heard a couple of his productions, head on down to download his wonderfully crafted Deeply Rooted Mixtape for our blog.  The tracklist can be found in the "lyrics" section of the Mp3's id3 tags.

Let 'er driiiiiiiiiiiiiip !!

DRM 014: Noah Pred

The 14th submission in our exclusive DRM mix series comes from Noah Pred, a great producer, DJ, buinessman and leader in the Canadian Techno scene and beyond.  The owner of the successful Thoughtless music imprint is a very busy guy who -- despite his constant hustle -- always finds the tme to invest in the well being of the artists on his label, put together fun events to help promote those artists and also to help those who have helped help him in the past.  With releases on Thoughtless, My Favourite Robot and New Kanada, among others, Noah Pred has established himself among the top techno producers out there.

Take a moment to download this wonderful exclusive mix that Noah sent us.  The mix is actually a live recording of a recent set Noah did at Li'ly, a Toronto bar & afterhours club - - one which sees a number of top producers and DJs rock out at.  Noah was also kind enough to share two amazing tracks with the readers of the Deep North, Milk Thistle and my personal favourite Unsung FWD Dub, both released on the Thoughless imprint. Enjoy!

DRM 013: Zaid Edghaim

What a hectic week.  I hope everyone is as stoked as I am to see Deepchild, Noah Pred, Alicia Hush and our very own Phantom Ambulance tonight at Li'ly resto lounge for the official Phantom Ambulance Medicine EP release party.  I just wish that our friend and Thoughtless Music artist Zaid Edghaim would also be in attendance, because word on the street is that he won't be making it.

Like they say, there is something good to be found in every bad situation.  So, while Zaid won't be there to celebrate with us tonight, the good news is that we have a new exclusive mix from him to add to our blazing hot Deeply Rooted Mixtape collection.  I got this sweet set from Zaid over a week ago, but the unstoppable DRM transport trucks have been unloading hot mix after mix on us, causing a serious roadblock of mixes on the trans-northern musical highway.

Get ready for a sweet journey through the deep, minimalist reaches of heaven.  People, this mix is nothing short of amazing, so buckle up, and keep your hands and feet out of the aisle.

DRM 012: Neoteric

Since our internet situation has been less than optimal (non-existant) until now, we have been having some trouble with our day to day transactions, one of which has been getting our good old pal Neoteric's Deeply Rooted Mixtape up on the blog so that we could all enjoy this delicious bag of candied tunage together.

Neoteric, who is originally from Canada's West coast, moved out to Europe in order to kick his music career into high gear.  The move has put Neoteric amongst some of the worlds finest electronic producers and our boy is constantly on that hustle and grind, day in and day out -- evidenced by some of the projects he has been working on.

In mid July Neo put out a gnarly followup to his electro house compilation, Turned On Volume 1, through Discobelle.  While the first volume in the compilation series was decidedly electro house, the followup has moved a bit more towards the techier side of house music, a flavourful mix of sweet electronica which we are loving over here at the Deep North.

Take small bite out of this remix of "How Deep Is Your Love" by Neoteric & Wax Motif -- a savory house biscuit remix -- and then tell us you don't want to devour the whole thing.  I bet you can't.  Download this beautiful bit from discobelle or XLR8TR for free.

The Rapture - How Deep Is Your Love (Neoteric & Wax Motif Remix) >>> [Free Download]

Earlier in the year Neoteric & Wax Motif came together with Southern Fried to put forth the Go Deep EP, which includes remixes of the club banger by Supabeatz, KeithMaxxi Soundsystem as well as local Toronto producer Gingy.  I really like the original mix, but I think Maxxi's version gives it a good run for it's money in my opinion, followed by the version put together by our fellow Torontonian Gingy.

Neoteric & Wax Motif - Go Deep >>> [BUY]

Neoteric & Wax Motif - Go Deep (Maxxi's 12" Deep Mix)  >>> [BUY]

Neoteric & Wax Motif - Go Deep (Gingy Remix) >>> [BUY]

As you can see, this guy likes to put in work.  It was no suprise to me that Neo has a very hard time finding a moment to breath in between putting together his White Light and unlisted mixes, doing radio shows for Scion, working as an A&R for Dubsided Records and touring the European continent to bang out shows for big crowds.  After being told that a mix would be difficult to get from him a couple of times, I had pretty much given up - - until one day a few months ago Neo hit me up saying that he had not forgotten us, and that he would have a Deep House mix put together exclusively for the blog.

So here it is folks, a Deep & Delicious mix by my man Neoteric straight out of Berlin, a place which undoubtedly influenced his selections and desire to focus a bit more on the deeper side of house, a side which i wish was as popular here in Canada as it is on the European continent.  Now, let's dig into this hearty melange of deep, dirty tracks.
