DRM032: POPULETTE [MAX PASK]

Yes, those are the faces of Populette's Max and Andrew on a sheet of acid. Populette will be at Late & Deep tomorrow night. Click picture for more info.

We usually don't post two Deeply Rooted Mixtapes as close together as we are today, but we have to put up Max Pask of Populette's mix in order to get it up before he plays LATE & DEEP #12 tomorrow.  Max is one half of NYC duo Populette which has original and remix releases on super cool labels such as Throne Of Blood, Peacefrog and Turbo.  What we like about Populette is their originality and creativity, something that is often spoken about but rarely practiced.  We cannot wait to see Max's set this Saturday night, he told me that he has prepared a proper shake session to get us all greased late night.  Super stoked for this one!!

I Am Not Daniel Diamond

MY name isn't Daniel Diamond, but I wash my hair every day.

I have been asked a couple of times now whether or not I am Daniel Diamond the producer.  The last person to ask me was Luke Pompey - - owner of Love Not Money records in the UK - - who wishes I was because he loves the 2002 track Champu (Shampoo) by the mysterious producer.  The upbeat shaker was released on City Rockers, an active label through 2001-2007 which released a number of joints by Felix Da Housecat.  Sorry Luke, but it's not me.  My facebook name is Daniel Diamond, and I can't change it which sucks ass because now people call me Daniel instead of Dan.  Brutal.  I also get asked regularily whether or not I am Jewish... and despite the "Daniel Diamond" facebook handle, I am not Jewish, and in fact my real last name is Tracy.  Anyways, I love this tune as much as Luke does, so here we go.  Foam that bitch up proper!!

Daniel Diamond - Champu >>> [BUY]

While we are here, I thought it would be cool to share some music by Luke Pompey, someone I was completely unaware of until he contacted me accidentally following my post on BUBBA's new remix on his Love Not Money label a couple of days ago.  I have been doing some research on Luke as a result and realized he did an official remix of Real Nice & Cubiq's tune Had Enough, which has recieved play on BBC's Radio 1.  Understandable as the original is extremely popular and his remix is a lovers jam worthy of making it onto the finest porn money can buy.  Sprinkle some rose pedals on your girl's bed and play this little nugget for her - - I bet you will get laid.  Maybe.

Real Nice & Cubiq - Had Enough (Luke Pompey Remix) >>> [BUY]

Before I leave you for the day, check out a couple of other sex-inducing steamers that Luke has rubbed out for you all.  Nasty.

TASC is a Toronto monster on the decks and has been putting in his work in studio - - catch him tonight at LATE & DEEP in Toronto.

TASC shot me this brand new video he put together for his track Across the Bridge.  TASC, a long time DJ in Toronto, has been turning up the heat on his productions as of late, and I cannot wait to see what else he has cooking in the god damn kitchen.  No doubt there is some tasty selections on the way.

Check out TASC tonight at our LATE & DEEP Party between 10pm and 6am.  Tasc is playing at 2am, so make sure you dont miss his set right before DJ FAME (NYC) goes on at 3am.  Super stoked!

TDNM003: MAX THE FAX - SQUIRREL TECHNIQUE MIXTAPE

It's been a minute since any of us here at the Deep North have made a TDNM (Team Deep North Mixtape) mix for the blog, and that is about to change.  Max the Fax made a mix for this sieries a few months ago and was stoked to share it with everyone, but that was made impossible by a disasterous hard drive failure that set him back more than a hot minute - - but from the ashes he has risen again, and one of the things he has done recently is record a new mix.

The mix is a fairly random selection of tunes from our youngest member's (quite small) post-hard drive apocalypse collection. Its a nice little blend of new and old music from both local friends and favourites as well as international greats who have inspired the Fax Machine.  Of course, the mix includes a few tunes which he has made and includes collaborations with friends - - such as Deep North crew mates Sean Roman, Rob Steal (White Lions) and myself, Dick Diamonds (The Hermans) - - which he is quite excited to share publically for the first time.

So come on down to squirrel town and get down - - we hope you enjoy the local cuisine.

You can find the tracklist on his soundcloud page.

To instantly download this mix, click here.

In case you missed it the first time around, check grab this free download of Max's official remix of Deepchild's tune The Suffering Ones.

No More Joking Around

Alrighty folks...  As you probably noticed a long time ago, we havent been doing our radio show as often as we had planned...  in fact its been over a month since we have done one at all.  The good news is we will be back NEXT WEDNESDAY for good (we hope) from 9pm - 12am on Dubplate Fm's Urban Boogie stream.  Go to the website and click the urban boogie stream at 9pm (EST) and listen to Dick Diamonds, Book and myself play some tunes we think you will like, and if you don't like them, well too bad.  Tonight you can catch our homies Deadly Vanity during the same time slot, and they will be on the air every following week - - in alternating weeks with our show.  This means that every wednesday you can catch great vibes and good tunes @ dubplate.fm between 9pm and 12am.  Zing!

We would also like to throw a quick mention on the topic of this coming weekend's Late & Deep party. This event is going to be a blast.  We have a tight little lineup of talented friends and extended deep north fam, headlined by Dj Fame (who you probably know for his jump up electro/party rockin tracks - - which we generally don't like).  Fear not, Fame will not be playing electro house, but rather, he will be bringing us a set filled with some of his favourite deep house and techno tracks at an all new location!  For all the details please click HERE

Heres a mix from the man himself to get your feet moving.

Hope to see you on the floor!

Bass Bin BUBBA

We don't know what they mean by Pig City. But BUBBA is the Baron of Bass.

Like, Wu-Tang is good - - but BUBBA is the best.

This sweet little sampler of Pig City's release on Italy's Zoo:Technique label.  The first two songs are nothing but a display of bass terror, especially the second tune which is a remix by BUBBA, and shows why the Irish producer is infamous for dropping basss bombs upon all crowds he encounters.  Get ready people, because our pal Bubba is coming to Toronto in mid April to show us how to shake the dancefloor.  It's tunes like these that remind me every time, why exactly I have named this man the Baron of Bass.

Keep your eyes open for his new label Running Wild with producer Chris James  of the duo Coat of Arms.  RW001 is on it's way and here is a sample of the first release, due out soon.

DRM026: Sacha Robotti

DRM026 comes from Sacha "Ricotti" Robotti: a cheese loving, pasta making, music producer of the finest grade.

Deeply Rooted Mixtape Number 26 comes to us by way of Berlin, from a dear friend of ours Sacha Robotti, who we recently had the pleasure of hosting in Toronto last December for Late & Deep #8.  We flew Sacha into Toronto purely on the gut instinct that the producer must make a serious spaghetti Bolognese, given that he has some real Italian tomato sauce in his blood.  Luckily we were right, and a beautiful friendship was forged out of hearty pasta sauce, freestyle sessions and a serious love for beats.

But all bullshit aside, the Klasse Recordings artist turned out to be a great dude, and we got a long just fine.  Recently, Sacha has been putting out some serious dancefloor grease, both as one half of Robosonic, and on his own.  As Robosonic, and through Jackmode Agency's imprint of the same name, Sacha released "The Sweetness EP" which is a smooth groovin release with a remix by the talented J. Phlip.

Robosonic - The Sweetness (Original Mix) >>> [BUY IT]

On his home label Klasse Recordings - - a favourite of ours here in the pit - - Sacha and label boss Luca Lozano team up for their Joyride EP which samples some classic Tears for Fears bits for a thick serving of heat, much like his home made Ragu.

Luca Lozano, Sacha Robotti - Joyride >>> [BUY IT]

Equally tasty was the news Sacha recieved while in our company that his longtime favourite imprint - - VonStroke's Dirtybird - - would be releasing his funky tune "The Major" on the commemorative "Hatched Part 1compilation.  This is a solid release which features the fine work of Claude VonStroke, Eats Everything, Kingdom and A1 Bassline.  Check it out.

Sacha Robotti - The Major (Original Mix) >>> [BUY IT]

We are super fucking stoked to have a third exclusive from the Klasse Family - - along with DRM008 by Mr. Ho and DRM010 by BUBBA), and I must say that this one is one of my favourite submissions to date.  This shit has been on heat street's re-peat reel for real.  This is the fucking Ragu, right here.  Better then this, only comes from seeing the monster that is Sacha Robotti playing live.

Thanks Sacha, this one is Ace!

The Grease Boutique [Vol. 1]

The Original Grease Boutique: Dick Diamonds & Paul Beazy, aka Bone$ McLeod (Pronounced: Mic-Loud). Taken somewhere, sometime by someone of two late night greasers.

Just wanted to hop in real quick like, with a little stinger by my boy Paul Beazy aka Bone$ McLeod.  This is the first little mix I have heard in a while from the witty Toronto-based rapper, slang-slinger and occasional selector.  The mix was not quite long enough to be submitted as a DRMbut definitely makes for a great listening experience with some new fire he just dug up in the mix.

For the fans of hip-hop out there, make sure you check out some of Bones' work under his other moniker Paul Beazy on RevebNation, which is essentially a "nickname of a nickname" - - a modified shortening of his original rap alias Paul Bearer.

You can catch Bone$ McLeod spinning an hour long set at TOTA Lounge tonight at around 11:30pm for a new weekly event called Deep Kiss Tuesdays.  Who knows, you may even see some of us out there in the crowd, or even spinning with him during his first set under the new new "Bone$ McLeod" moniker.  The new weekly event will happen tonight, then jump onto a weekly basis starting in two weeks, on Tuesday the 27th.

It's gonna be fun.  A "real pearll" of a time, as some might say in Italy - - so come out!!

To download this mix, click here.  Enjoy it, and look forward to the next volume in Paul's Grease Boutique Mix Series.

DRM025: Dirty Dale

DJ Dirty Dale can move crowds like few others can, a pillar in Toronto's house music community.

Twenty-five.  No, I am not talking about my age, or the number of times I have woken up in a ditch without pants on.  Not this time.  Rather, it refers to our Deeply Rooted Mixtape series, and the current volume that is being released here before your eyes today, December 8th, 2012.

Twenty-five exclusively mixed sets in nine short months.  Awesome.  To make that even sweeter, the twenty fifth mix comes from Dale Arsenault, simply, but aptly known as Dirty Dale in Toronto's house music scene.  Originally, Dale was known as a dancer, a lover of music who could move his damn feet, arms and body like a mother fucking boss, leaving jaws on the floor and bystanders wanting more.  To exemplify this point, check out this clip of Dale smashing the dance in Montreal circa 2008.  Yes, he can still dance better than all of us.

DIRTY DALE MERKING THE SHIT OUT OF THE COMPETITION.  UNREAL.

I never knew Dale as a dancer, only as a DJ.  The first time I saw him spin was at some rave cave on Queen West, in one of the units above the infamous W Afterhours, aka 721.  Picture it.  I walk into the party, which has barely begun, and crack a cold one.  The DJ is a smaller man, unique, yet filled with a demonic energy waiting to be unleashed - - and it was - - before the swelling crowd that steadily pumped  into the space.  Forward ten minutes, and the beads of sweat on this DJ's brow had swelled to the point that they were rolling down his face, and thats when it came.  Like an eighteen wheeler with an oversized load, the drop was absolutely massive, and the crowd literally went fucking apeshit - - and the whole room shook like we were at the epicenter of some fucking world disaster.  Almost instantly, the DJ with little beads of sweat and no name was drenched from head to toe, kids hanging from the ceiling and the mirrored interior of the rave cave (dance studio) were fogged up like we were all in there having a group shower.  I found out from one of the panting partygoers that the DJ's name was Dirty Dale.  The guy was amazing.   So amazing that the DJ after him played  for about ten minutes, and the party was over.  No one could stand hearing an "OK" set after watcing an Atomic Dance Bomb go off before their eyes.

For me, Dirty Dale is exactly what a REAL DJ is.  Someone who is absolutely passionate about music, their craft and always has the dancefloor in mind - - not just the newest tunes haphazardly throwin into a "set".  I am not a DJ.  Dirty Dale is a proper fucking DJ, and I am not afraid to say that he is the best male DJ in this city, hands down.  While he does do some producing, he is not known for that.  He is known as a selector who knows his shit, who probably even knows your shit more then you do, and who has developed a solid following of supporters who want to see him unleash that unbelievable energy that motivates dancers on any dancefloor, anytime, anywhere.  He has incredible draw for someone who -- until recently -- was "just a DJ".

A Recent Remix of "Quick" by Jill Scott  >> Click to Download from Dirty Dale's Soundcloud

Since I first saw him spin about two years ago, I have seen this Dirt Hurricane absolutely destroy dancefloors across our city at least a dozen times or more.  Most of the time Dale is more excited than the crowd is, riding a wave of emotional energy like a general in battle, commanding the respect of those who follow him from venue to venue, battle to battle, dancefloor to dancefloor. Seven times out of ten, Dale will simply steal the show from the international headliners he is contracted to open or close for - - anyone remember Gramaphonedzie's set at the Great Hall a couple of months ago?  Anyone?

Dale playing with Karizma @ Sunnyside, Toronto. >> Video by homies Lettherebehouse.ca

A little Clip of DJ DIRTY DALE @ Footwork, Toronto.

So here it is, DRM025 by Dirty Dale.  It is with great pleasure that the boys and I at The Deep North present  this wonderful exclusive mix to all of our readers and the hundreds of Dirty Dale fans out there - - we are honoured.

Dirty Dale is the best in the game.  Thanks for being such an inspiration.  You are one of the reasons we do what we do.
