Usually Not Usual (002)

Image by Bioniq / G. Gieseking

The tunes you are about to hear are usually not usual fare here at the Deep North, but we just want to remind you that we sometimes like music that is not house, techno or minimal.  The usually not usual saga continues...

Russian producer Long Arm is a very interesting individual who is into more than just music, a point which our homies over at earmilk seem to agree withus on.  An all around monster of art, I am definitly bigging up this guy's experimental hip-hop productions - - such as the jazzy number Double Bass In Love - - which are super artsy and would definitly screw with one's confused, meandering mind as it wanders through the darkness of a sad night alone.  Emotional bits.  Don't cry.

Long Arm - Double Bass In Love >>> [BUY LONGARM]

This next tune comes from American singer and songwriter Raphael Saadiq, and the song I really want to share with the world is "Keep Marchin" from his album The Way I See It.  Listen to this asshole's beautiful music for yourself to see why I am in love.  While his tunes are wonderfully wicked, I was most impressed with how many pots of honey "Pooh Bear" Saadiq has had his hands in over the years.  With an active hand in the production of TLC, Macy Grey, The Roots and D'Angelo (to name a few examples), one could say that this guy is a phenom of sorts, especially once you learn he has been part of Mick Jagger's backing band and even started a shortlived project with the guys from A Tribe Called Quest.  Serious business.  Readd Saadiq's biography here for the unedited full story.

Raphael Saadiq - Keep Marchin' >>> [BUY NOW]

In the interest of keeping my characteristic rambling to a minimum, I won't talk anymore than is necessary.  The next three songs, All Touch, Say My Name, and Imported Goods by Canada's Rough Trade, Germany's Northern Lite, and America's Action Bronson are all serious tunes that keep my shit going strong.  I hope that they put some zing in your thing as well.  Much love!

Grassitaliano: M&J Tribute Mix

Picture by Merry Somers, All Rights Reserved // Click Picture For More On Merry

This mix comes from our Italian friend Marco Grassi, a DJ, Producer and Promoter from Livorno who is an avid follower of all things Deep and Northern.  Marco has posted a couple of mixes on our blog's fan page, and I decided it was a good time to give one of them a feature here on the blog.

This mix is a b2b set between Marco and Jody, two close DJ friends who made this 2+ hour mix for their friend "SV", who unfortunately passed away recently.  This hefty mix should help you get through the day, as it includes all sorts of hot deep house and tech house tunes that will recieve a nod of approval from many, if not most, of those reading this.  The Deep North salutes the life of Marco & Jody's dear friend and hopes that "SV" is hearing this tribute mix wherever they may be.  God bless.

You Can Call Me Sleazy

I am Bea Sleazy, the newest contributor for The Deep North and I happen to enjoy house music. It's something I came to terms with long ago and am now forcing upon everyone else by way of the internet. Thank god for the internet. Anyway, I tend to lean towards deep or tech house with a little disco or soul here and there. Lately I’ve been pretty mired in getting ready for Frosh Week and the start of school but I managed to find a couple cool tracks to show off.

First up, I’ve got the track that put UK producer Jon Rundell on the electronic dance music map earlier this summer. It’s new, it’s exciting, it’s tech house and who doesn’t like tech house? But seriously, this guy makes cool music and you should definitely check out this song.

Jon Rundell - Knick Knack (Original Mix) by RichR

This is more awesome tech house, this time from Italian trio Macromism. This track was released in late July on Rawthentic Music and I’m really feeling the vocals.

Macromism - Groover [SC-EDIT] by Rawthentic Music

I love deep house. There’s something about deep, soulful music like this that’s hard to dislike. This is the first track that Noir & Haze put out together and comes from Noir’s own label, Noir Music. It’s the first single from Noir’s upcoming album, due out in early 2012

Noir & Haze - Around (Solomun Vox Remix) by irina

This fine number by Germany’s Agaric is so feel-good it almost hurts. It’s a wee bit drawn out for my taste but it’s great anyway. It’s fairly down-tempo and mellow but just fast and soulful enough to make a body boogie.

Agaric - No Way I Know I Feel (Axel Boman remix) - Ovum Recordings by axelboman

That's all I've got for now. Hope to see you all this Saturday at Bunda for DJ Fame!

DRM 015: Driip

One more time, we are here.  Here at the mouth of the DRM machine, waiting to see what new and exclusive mix we will recieve from the belly of the beast.  I am stoked to share this next DRM mix with you guys because it comes from a young and talented DJ/producer known by two names: his formal, birth name, Brandon Sprouse, and his pseudonym "driip"which I happen to like quite a bit - - as it could mean a number of weird things, especially after delving into his dark, dirty and grimey taste in music.

Sprouse has often said that his signature sound is no-nonsense techno, the kind that keeps your head pointed downward in a dark room, freeing your mind from surrounding distractions while focusing it on the sounds that surround.  Dark, bass heavy techno music is the passion of this up and coming Toronto Native, and you can expect to hear a lot more about the design student's ascent through the techno ranks - - especially if he remains focused on his plan to move to Berlin in order to pursue a full blown career in music.

Brandon can be found posting as a contributing member of the active Toronto blog-squad ElectroTO.  Of course, that is when he is not producing sick music or embedding hot techno tracks on facebook for me to freak out over.  Now that you have heard a couple of his productions, head on down to download his wonderfully crafted Deeply Rooted Mixtape for our blog.  The tracklist can be found in the "lyrics" section of the Mp3's id3 tags.

Let 'er driiiiiiiiiiiiiip !!

S.A.S. = Such Awesome Stuff?

"S.A.S. is Subb-an and Shelton, and it’s our alias for the more housey, broken beat, Chicago, after party style tunes. It is more edits based but you will hear in some of them that the music has been totally reproduced, we’’ve got loads of S.A.S stuff to come this year"

- Subb-an, in his interview for The Burlington Project

It took me a while to figure it out, but S.A.Ssimply stands for Subb-an and Sheltonand I had been vibing off of this duo's collaboration work well before I had any idea who the two producers behind the project were.  Knowing who S.A.S. really are has put all the mysterious pieces into place for me, as the talented and extremely versatile duo produces everything from nu-disco to deep house to hip hop.

I am a fan of both producers' solo work, and the two have been on a tremendous heat streak with awesome releases on labels such as Foot & Mouth and Hot Natured.  Their latest release on Foot & Mouth, the Are You Satisfied EP, is more than satisfying, if I may say so myself.  The four edits on the release are funky, fresh and banging dancefloor fire starters.   Check out You Gotta Think from their latest release, as well as some solo productions from each producer before digging into this S.A.S. Mix made for the Soulclap Blog.  Such Awesome Stuff.

Hooked On Heart Beats

Artwork by Dick DiamondsTwo songs with that feelgood Nu-Disco vibe.  Two song's by talented producers.  Two song's united in one post because they both contain the word "heartbeat" in them.  This is as good of a reason as any for me to write a post on lovely music that sends shivers up the spine and moves my soul - -  hopefully yours as well.

This re-work of Heartbeat by Paul Woolford takes the cake at this Nu Disco party, mainly for its amazingly catchy and pleasant melody, which turns a seemingly sad tune into something happy, one could almost even say it makes you feel euphoric.  Simply put, I love this Locol Action release with all of my heart.  *Blush*

If you haven't been able to tell, I am a Sean Roman addict.  Failing at other avenues to finally "Shake the Seans",  I am now trying to drag all of my friends into this addiction with me - - in order to feel some security that I am not alone in this dark, dark world of Roman tune binging.  Actually, it's a great addiction to have, especially since Sean produces only the cleanest smack for one to bang out to, such  this wicked edit of Glass' song Let Me Feel Your Heartbeat.  Somebody call the doctor.

Strange Animals, Talking Melodies

It's no secret amongst those who know me that I am an absolutely crazy fanatic for the music of Jamie Jones.  It might be a lesser known fact that I am also a huge fan of the Talking Heads, a band which made wonderful music between 1976 - 1988, and which has developed a well deserved cult-following, largely due to the genius of it's lead singer David Byrne.

What do you get when you combine Jamie Jones, Wolf + Lamb's main man Gadi Mizrahi and The Talking Heads?  This wonderful edit of 1983's This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody), easily one of my favourite tracks by this classic band.  Enjoy the video of the original tune, then check out the wicked edit - - released by Wolf + Lamb Black on Vinyl.

While you're at it, you may as well grab Music for Dreams' owner Kenneth Badger's edit of David Byrne's song Strange Overtones as well.  Although it is a little less "electronic" than what we usually post, I will still bet 1 million dollars that most will love this succulent musical morsel.

Joey, Jozif and Kevin

I have three tracks here which are worth mentioning, not because they are all fresh on the market, but because I have played them so much that I almost feel obliged to.

The first track I will mention is the original mix of Kings Cross by Joey Jumble and Felipe Cruz, released in the fall of 2009 on PM Music.  This tech house track would be perfect for a big room party with fat, rounded bass and powerful kicks - - definitly one for those all hopped up and ready to jump around.  Far from deep, this one may actually be very annoying to some of you, and even slightly dangerous for anyone suffering from ADD.  Let's risk it.

Next up is one from the UK's Kevin McKaya bad ass house producer who is also the founder of the Glasgow Underground imprint.  His track Propaganda is possibly the most standout track from his Club World EP, released in the first quarter of 2011 on Glasgow Underground.  This house track is a banger which will pound the living crap out of your head, and likely cause your downstairs neighbours to bang against their cieling in hopes that you might actually keep it down.  Prediction.  True?

Finally, the third track I wish to share comes from the deeper end of the spectrum unlike the previous two tunes and was one of the tracks recommended on Juno's February Tech/Minimal chart - - which is excactly where I heard this InFine release first.  The song is called Sunrise by England's Jozifa name which has been getting more and more attention over the past year.  Read the review of Jozif's Sunrise EP (4/5) on Resident Advisor - - and for those really digging the tune, make sure you peep Jozif's podcast for Resident Advisor, RA.235, which is packed full of exclusive edits and remixes.

DRM 014: Noah Pred

The 14th submission in our exclusive DRM mix series comes from Noah Pred, a great producer, DJ, buinessman and leader in the Canadian Techno scene and beyond.  The owner of the successful Thoughtless music imprint is a very busy guy who -- despite his constant hustle -- always finds the tme to invest in the well being of the artists on his label, put together fun events to help promote those artists and also to help those who have helped help him in the past.  With releases on Thoughtless, My Favourite Robot and New Kanada, among others, Noah Pred has established himself among the top techno producers out there.

Take a moment to download this wonderful exclusive mix that Noah sent us.  The mix is actually a live recording of a recent set Noah did at Li'ly, a Toronto bar & afterhours club - - one which sees a number of top producers and DJs rock out at.  Noah was also kind enough to share two amazing tracks with the readers of the Deep North, Milk Thistle and my personal favourite Unsung FWD Dub, both released on the Thoughless imprint. Enjoy!
