Phantom Ambulance's Medicine EP On Thoughtless Music

ATTENTION ALL READERS, LISTENERS & LURKERS.

We have a special announcement today concerning some of our crew members here at the Deep North, in particular the two weirdo's who make up Toronto's hottest new Techno duo Phantom Ambulance.  For those who don't know anything about this see-through EMS vehicle which produces bad-ass tech house, deep house and techno, the duo consists of twenty-one year old friends and obsessive music fans Max the Fax (Deep North founding member, resident DJ and contributor) and Maxwell Lucas (Deep North resident DJ).

The two young producers came together less than a year ago after techno-loving Max the Fax had decided to step his production game up from Garageband to Ableton, following a post I did on his tunes on plugged not thugged last spring and after playing his first ever DJ set at Tick, Tech, Toe, a tech-house night at downtown drinkhole TOTA Lounge.  Maxwell Lucas, a classically trained musician, was lured into the EDM scene by his longtime friend Max's obsession, and before one could blink an eye the two were pumping out killer tunes that were so technically sound, quirky and novel that they impressed even the most respected producers in the game, including Canadian techno titan and Thoughtless Music head Noah Pred.

After hearing a few tunes by the Ambulance, Noah decided to back The Medicine EP, a four track digital release on Thoughtless Music which includes two original tracks -- Medicine and Fabulous -- along with two remixes of Medicine by producers Beton Brut and Dactilar.  The EP is the first release for the boys, and we could not be happier then to see it happen on a Canadian label run by a veteran musician such as Noah, who treats the label as a large family.  In case you are not familiar with this label, the exceptionally talented roster should speak volumes in terms of Thoughtless' penchant for releasing only extremely high quality work.  The imprint has released material by some of the worlds best EDM producers including Jonny White, Kate Simko, Talal & Zoi, James Teej, Mike Shannon, Arthur Oskan, Sean Roman, Zaid Edghaim, Tomas Jirku and Noah Pred himself.  I speak on the whole crew's behalf when I say thank you to Thoughtless Music, Noah and everyone who has supported Phantom Ambulance in the past, present and future.

Below I am going to include four 3-minute previews of the entire Medicine EP, from the originals to the remixes, to give everyone a taste of what the release is like.  We will also direct you to the groubs Bandcamp Page where you will be able to download around five to six previously shared 320kbps Phantom Ambulance tracks FOR FREE!!  GO GET THEM WHILE ITS HOT!!!

DRM 011: Tasc

Our eleventh exclusive comes from our home town of Toronto, courteousy of our friend Matt Patry, aka Tasc, a well known veteran DJ and turntablist in the Canadian music scene.  I am not kidding when I say that this guy brings the big guns to any dance floor shootout he gets involved with, often turning any crowd into a frenzied dance mob within minutes of touching the decks.  I personally wish I could see him spin this weekend in the Algonquin area for WEMF, a major music festival held deep in the Northern bass-bushes of Ontario.  Although he may been known more recently for his bass banging sets characteristic of the Channel One family, Patry is a bigtime house head, a lover of that good old four to the floor that we love so much here at The Deep North.  Folks, it is for this reason that we called upon him to cook up something extra nice for the readers of our blog.  Tasc's oven just opened up, and let's just say you should expect a delicious treat of hot, hot heat.

The Channel One bass-ballin' team member and Spaceballin' head honcho brings us a big, bad musical meatloaf jammed with all sorts of dance floor goodies and cooked to sweet, succulent aural perfection.  We suggest that you prepare yourself because this hot loaf of house music is so dirty that you will have to put on a bib just to keep your life presentable after digging into this one.  Prepare to bob and weave for a good hour and a half, as Tasc took this mix to the limit.  Don't think about it, just dig into it.  Are you up to the task?

Feelgood Patch

This track by newcomer Outboxx has really been doing it for me lately, standing out from the ever-accelerating stream of killer UK-bass rooted house productions for it's rejection of the futurist sounds usually employed by the genre in favour of a very traditional sound palette that is nothing if not refreshing.  The great side-chained keys and groovy synth-bass sound could almost be stock presets found in garageband, but the focus here is all on the vibe and melody.  Check the track below to hear what I am talking about.

We Need A Connection...

We have moved to a new spot, and as a result, have been without internet in The Deep North HQ for the past week.  Fear not, we should be back in action in the next few days.  We apologize for the slow rate of updates.  Great news though, as we have great new exclusive mixes on the way from Neoteric, Tasc and Zaid Edghaim.  That should build some anticipation for the coming week.

In the meantime, enjoy these sweet tunes by Danny Daze, Maceoplex and Caribou.

Danny Daze - Fall Away From Love >>> [BUY]

DJ T. - City Life ft. Cari Goldman (Maceo Plex Remix) >>> [BUY]

Virgo Four - It's A Crime (Caribou Remix) >>> [BUY]

Benoit & Sergio - Principles >>> [BUY]

Again, we apologize for the slow updates, but we will be back in action soon enough.  Thanks for the patience.

Who The Fuck Is... (002)

LEE WEBSTER??

I was tuned into this amazingly talented producers music by Bubba, through his wicked exclusive mix for The Deep North (Bubba's Bass Huggin Mix - DRM010).  It was here that I first heard the track Style Wars, as it was the opening song on Bubba's murderous mix.  I had never heard of Lee Webster (aka Mr. Hi Rize, Larry Concha) before, but I am super glad that our boy Bubba introduced his tunes to us.  This guy is a phenomenal producer, especially in terms of the number of high quality tunes he churns out each month.  Take a look at his soundcloud to get an idea about just what I am talking about.  Tons of great tunes, edits and remixes populate the page, most which are unsigned and offered as free downloads. Hey label heads!! Wake up and smell the Webster...there are tons of heaters waiting to be picked up and released.

I think it will be a matter of time before we start hearing more and more about Mr. Webster and his obsession with both fingers and house music.  Originally from London, the Barcelona-based Webster's production is not only limited to House music, as you will see that he also produces some wicked Hip-Hop tracks and even some bass music.  Heavily influenced by garage, jackin house, disco, funk, hip hop and deep house, Lee states that his musical style can be described as a marriage between "Dope and Deep".  I would have to agree.

Here are a few of Lee's tracks which I picked up off his soundcloud page.  You should do the same, you will love it.  To download the tracks, click each tracks "download" button on the soundcloud player.

Lee Webster - Trains & Walls (Style Wars)

Lee Webster - Stroke Your Cat

Todd Terry - Scat Cat (Lee Webster's Scat Dog Remix)

Lee Webster - Mango Love

Lee Webster - Menage A Trois

Wu Tang Clan - Da Mystery of Chessboxing (Lee Webster's Cocaine Disco Remix)

I love Wu-Tang as much as life itself, and I personally thank Lee for doing this remix of a classic.

Randovids

Here.  A few songs I love.....to bits.  Why?  I just do.  I would marry each one of them if it was possible.

Jamie Principle - A Cold World >>> [Vinyl]

Just nothing less than a stone cold classic house track.  Pure, unbridled heat.  What a beautiful track - - respects to Mr. Principle for changing my life with this tune.  Woah.

Seuil (ft. Jaw) - Ultravision > > > [BUY]

French producer Seuil released this track on Supplement Facts in May, and it has become one of my most adored tracks this - - now quickly passing - - summer.  This guy is a creative monster on that production tip...creating several leviathans of dance including this massive tune with vocalist Jaw.  Bigger than big type deal.

Check out what Greg Sawyer of Resident Advisor thought of the Ultra Vision EP.  I personally think he gave the EP an undeservedly low rating given how absolutely wonderful this emotional peice is... I would personally go with 4 stars because Seuil got it right on this tune.  So right.

Kikumoto Allstars - Warehouse Days > > > [BUY]

This song was released over a year ago now on Kikumoto Allstars' album House Music I guess one could say I am a bit late with this one.   I don't even know what the fucking warehouse days were for god's sake... but I am gonna guess big raves in the 1990s or something.  Who knows....  I know one thing - -   I don't know anything about it.  Either way - - many of this Australian's tracks are great, especially this one, a slow roller with an infectiously catchy melody.

dOP - Your Sex (Art Department's Shades OF Gotica Remix) > > > [BUY]

What can we say about dOP and Art Department that has not been said by someone else in a much more eloquent manner, with much more finesse? Absolutely nothing.  This is a great remix, especially since I personally do not care much for the Original by dOP.

DRM 010: BUBBA

Deeply Rooted Mixtape number ten.  Its hard to believe that four months have quickly passed us and that we are already on our tenth exclusive mix in our Deeply Rooted series.  The response to the mix series has been overwhelming, with major talents such as Tomas Jirku, Mr. Ho and Barletta, among others, taking time to carefully craft us exclusive works to share with our beloved readers.  We thank everyone for their contruibutions and are happy to announce that the tenth mix is just as special.

Our tenth mix comes from Jonny Smyth, aka Bubba, a man with magical talent in music and who, although not as widely recognized as some of his more mainstream counterparts, has released music with some of the most respected  names in the industry.  Hailing from Belfast, Ireland, Bubba is a man with serious accomplishments in the house music game.  With his friend Mark Scoper, Bubba released tracks on Luke Solomon and Derrick Carter's label Classic and Paul Woolford's project Hip Therapy.  Bubba also has worked with Jet Project on a team project called Bubba & T-Bone, with releases on labels such as Elevation, Mode Music and Tom Budden's Alive Imprint.  As a solo artist, Bubba has been making major moves as well, with amazing releases on respected labels such as Klasse Recordings, Extended Play, Assymetric and Logical.  The future looks friendly for this hard working house head who loves big bass and the odd wonk and skronk - - we hope to see our good friend out here in Toronto in the coming year or so, and we would love it if you could too.

We are honoured to present to you Bubba's Bass Huggin' Mix, the tenth in our Deeply Rooted Mixtape series.  This one-hour long mix is packed with wicked tunes from artists such as Manik, Tom Demac, Chirs Carrier, Kink & Neville Watson, dOP and Maceo Plex.  Get your dancing shoes on and prepare for some serious action kids - - Bubba is here, and he is not fucking around.

In Full Swing

I've been a bit slack on the postings the last few weeks but in that time have accumulated a large amount of new material to share with the Deep North readers.  Toronto has had no shortage of great events over the last while and there's been a similar glut of great new releases clocking my radar over the last few weeks, with these three tracks in particular having stood out to me as sharing the feel-good summer vibe that is permeating the city right now.

Hackman is an artist covered  on these pages a while ago by Dick Diamonds, and his recently released Close is maybe my favorite thing he has done yet.  This tune straddles the borders between house and dubstep, mainstream accesibility and underground integrity, and is all about uniting bodies on the dancefloor.  HUGE tune for summer nights.

On a bit more of a funky steppin' tip is Fill My Coffee by relative newcomer Arkist on the always exciting Apple Pips label out of Bristol.  This track is subdued and spacious but in no way lacks in the kind of momentum that inevitably pulls your body in several different directions at once.  Check the back and forth between the bassline and percussion and just wait for the breakdown...

Arkist - Fill My Coffee >>> [BUY IT]

Lastly, another UK Funky tune that I first heard in Kode 9's Radio 1 Essential mix and have been eagerly waiting for ever since is Ossie's Set the Tone.  The percussion in this track is on an entirely different level from most players in the scene and it has garnered this producer a great amount of well-deserved attention and airtime.  Coupled with the catchy vocoder line it makes for another summer anthem that will surely be making it onto many playlists in the next few months.

Nine Lives

Original Colour Painting by Jimmy Chiale, Toronto.  Follow Jimmy.

C.9ine is an upcoming production duo from South Africa, a place where unfortunately, North Americans seldom get a chance to hear house music come from.  The duo is made up of Danny and Skitzo - - both hailing from Johannesberg, South Africa - - who, after meeting in 2004, have refined their ability to bang out some really wicked music which is highly influenced by their African culture and heritage, aka Deep Afro House.  The versatile duo makes music which ranges from break beats to deep house and beyond, bringing with it some African flavour which feels truely authentic and would be hard not to take in and enjoy.

C.9ine ft. Joao Orecchia - Wonder >>> [BUY CD]

C.9ine's tune Wonder is getting a lot of attention amongst my friends, including a major fan or theirs, our very own Max the Fax.  Here are a couple of tracks from the duos Soundgarden and Chasing releases.  Be sure to check out their Soundcloud space and Twitter to keep up to date with happenings from these cats - - they will be a pair to watch over the next year.  Their Soundgarden LP is very hard to find, as it is only available in stores - - unless it has been ripped, and we would never condone that type of lawless behaviour... .. .. .  .    .   . Anyways, I hope you enjoy a fine time with C.9ine.  Big ups to African House music!
